Aim and Scope

Uganda Journal of Nursing and Midwifery is an open access, peer-reviewed journal that considers articles on all aspects of nursing and midwifery research, training, education, and practice.

Instructions to Authors

Prior to submission, please carefully read and follow the submission guidelines detailed below. Manuscripts that do not conform to the submission guidelines may be returned without review.

Authorship

Everyone listed as an author should meet the criteria for authorship. Everyone who meets our criteria for authorship must be listed as an author. All authors will take public responsibility for the content of the manuscript submitted to UJNM. The contributions of all authors must be described.

All authors will be contacted by email at submission to ensure that they are aware of and approve the submission of the manuscript, its content, and its authorship.

Qualifying for Authorship

UJNM Authorship criteria is based on the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (ICMJE).

The ICMJE lists four conditions for authorship credit. Authors must meet all four conditions in order to be listed.

  • Substantial contributions to conception and design, acquisition of data, or analysis and interpretation of data, and
  • Drafting the article or revising it critically for important intellectual content, and
  • Final approval of the version to be published, and
  • Agreement to be accountable for all aspects of the work in ensuring that questions related to the accuracy or integrity of any part of the work are appropriately investigated and resolved.

Article Types

UJNM publishes the following types of articles:

  • Research articles: reports the results of original primary research, including quantitative and qualitative studies, systematic reviews, and other work. These are peer reviewed.
  • Commentaries: reports opinions or explanations about an event or situation or a newly published article. Commentaries are peer reviewed. It can be in two forms:
    • An editorial, should be grounded in the relevant literature and covers an important aspect of practice and or seeks to move the field forward in some way.
    • A commentary on a study or review that was recently published or that is soon to be published, and that is interesting enough to warrant further comment or explanation. It should discuss specific issues within a subject area rather than the whole field, explain the implications of the article, and put it in context. 

 

Style and Format

File Format

Manuscript files can be in the following formats: DOC or DOCX. Microsoft Word documents should not be locked or protected.

Length

Manuscripts are limited to 3000 words from background to conclusion, excluding the title page, abstract, and references.

Font

Use a Times New Roman, font size 12

Headings

Limit manuscript sections and sub-sections to 3 heading levels. Make sure heading levels are clearly indicated in the manuscript text.

Layout and spacing

Manuscript text should be double-spaced.

Do not format text in multiple columns.

Page and line numbers

 

Include page numbers and line numbers in the manuscript file. Use continuous line numbers (do not restart the numbering on each page).

Footnotes

Footnotes are not permitted. If your manuscript contains footnotes, move the information into the main text or the reference list, depending on the content.

Language

Manuscripts must be submitted in English.

Abbreviations

Define abbreviations upon first appearance in the text.

Do not use non-standard abbreviations unless they appear at least three times in the text.

Keep abbreviations to a minimum.

Writing,  Citation and Reference

style

UJNM uses the most recent “APA” style (7th ed.)

Manuscript Organization

Manuscripts should be organized as follows. Instructions for each element appear below the list.

Beginning

section

 

The following elements are required, in order:

 Title page: List title, authors, and affiliations as first page of the manuscript. Title should be in sentence case

 Abstract

 Introduction

Middle

section

 

The following elements can be renamed as needed and presented in any order:

 Materials and Methods

 Results

 Discussion

 Conclusions

Ending

section

 

The following elements are required, in order:

 Acknowledgments

 References

 Supporting information captions (if applicable)

 

Title page

The title page should:

  • present a title that includes the study design if appropriate or a description of what the article reports
  • list the full names, institutional addresses and email addresses for all authors
  • indicate the corresponding author (Full name, institutional address, email, and telephone contact)
  • include Keywords, three to ten keywords representing the main content of the article.

Abstract

The abstract should be structured to include: Background, Methods, Results, and Conclusion. It should not exceed 300 words. It should not include citations or abbreviations.

Introduction

The introduction should: 

  • Provide background that puts the manuscript into context and allows readers outside the field to understand the purpose and significance of the study
  • Define the problem addressed and why it is important
  • Include a brief review of the key literature
  • Note any relevant controversies or disagreements in the field
  • Conclude with a brief statement of the overall aim of the work and a comment about whether that aim was achieved

Materials and Methods

The Materials and Methods section should provide enough detail to allow suitably skilled investigators to fully replicate your study. Specific information and/or protocols for new methods should be included in detail.

Results, Discussion, Conclusions

This section should describe the results of the experiments/study

Discussion and conclusion

It should include the interpretation of these results and the conclusions that can be drawn. Authors should explain how the results relate to the hypothesis presented as the basis of the study and provide a concise explanation of the implications of the findings, particularly in relation to previous related studies and potential future directions for research.

Tables and Figures

Tables and figures should be formatted using the APA style. There is no limit on the number of tables and figures allowed.

Commentary Organization

Commentaries should be 1000 to 1500 words and have a maximum of ten references. It should not contain figures or tables.

Manuscript submission

Steps for Submission

Submission to the Uganda Journal of Nursing and Midwifery will follow the following steps:

Step 1: Author submits a manuscript or commentary

Step 2: Editor confirms receipt of the manuscript or commentary to the author

Step 3: Manuscript or commentary sent to reviewers

Step 4: Reviewers advises basing on the following course of actions:

  • Accept, without corrections
  • Revise, with minor corrections
  • Revise, with major corrections
  • Reject, notify the author

Peer review process

The peer review process is blinded. Each submission will be peer reviewed by a minimum of two (2) peer reviewers.
