GUIDANCE ON THE REQUIREMENT OF 2-YEAR EXPERIENCE FOR NURSES AND MIDWIVES BEFORE UPGRADING
The Uganda Nurses and Midwives Council (UNMC) requires Nurses and Midwives to have at least 2 years of experience before pursuing additional training. However, there are exceptions and clarifications to this rule:
Certificate to Diploma in Nursing or Midwifery: After obtaining a certificate in Nursing or Midwifery, 2 years of experience are mandatory before proceeding for further studies, and the 2 years are calculated from the date of first licensure with UNMC.
Diploma (Direct) to Bachelor’s: The 2-year experience requirement applies to this category.
Diploma (Extensor) to Bachelor’s: The 2-year experience is not required for this category. They can proceed immediately. They can also proceed immediately if they wish to do another diploma, for example, a Diploma in Advanced Palliative Care Nursing (ADPCN), a Diploma in Critical Care Nursing, a Diploma in Public Health Nursing, etc.
Bachelor’s degree (Direct) to Master’s degree: one (1) year of experience is required after internship before advancing to a master’s degree in Nursing or Midwifery.
Bachelor’s degree (completion) to Master’s degree: One (1) year of experience is also required after the internship before advancing to a master’s in Nursing or Midwifery.
We call upon all nurses and midwives to follow these rules/requirements before advancing for further studies to avoid being inconvenienced at the time of registration and licensure.
